The AZWARN Annual Meeting is scheduled for November 9, 2011 from 10:00 to 3:00. The City of Scottsdale is providing the meeting location at their Water Operations Building located at 9312 N. 94th Street, Scottsdale AZ 85258. A meeting Agenda will be sent out as the date gets closer. If anyone has any items that should be placed on the agenda, please let me know.

Join us in exploring models for sustainability that feature cross-agency collaboration for
green infrastructure and resource recovery. Building on the discoveries of the 2010
Leadership Conference in Philadelphia, the Clean Water America Alliance will host urban
water leaders on October 3-5, 2011 in the World Water Hub - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for
the 2011 Urban Water Sustainability Leadership Conference.
Given shrinking budgets, communities around the country are turning towards
sustainable approaches to help save money, become more resilient, and prepare for the
future. Green infrastructure can help prevent overflows and stormwater runoff problems,
reduce energy costs, adapt to climate change, and beautify neighborhoods. Resource
recovery, such as energy, nutrients, and other valuable materials, can reduce demand
on stressed water supplies, improve watershed health, and boost economic productivity.
Responsive to the needs of today and responsible for meeting the needs of tomorrow, communities around the country are leading the way with bold, sustainable
decision-making and innovation that enhances how we meet our core missions.

TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT

DESCRIPTION
Course will review pumps, piping, mechanical equipment, and electrical components commonly used in lift stations and provide an opportunity for attendees to work with this equipment during classroom exercises. Common hydraulic problems are discussed and demonstrated including the effects of velocity, water hammer, and entrapped air. Operating problems related to debris, grease, and odor control are examined. Jamie Quick of Lienberger & Associates will be teaching the class.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Identify common lift station types and equipment and piping/valve considerations
- Describe basic hydraulic considerations in lift station operations
- Apply systematic pump and control troubleshooting techniques
- Describe common operational problems and cost controls
- Review applicable codes, safety compliance, and emergency procedures
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This interactive and hands-on training course is for operators, wastewater managers, and engineering staff interested in an overview of lift station operations and troubleshooting.
LOCATION
The course will be held at the Windmill Suites of Chandler; 3535 W. Chandler Boulevard, Chandler, AZ 85226; telephone (480) 812-9600 or (800) 547-4747.
COURSE LENGTH
The Lift Station Operations course is scheduled for 3 days, beginning at 8:00 am on August 30, 2011 and concluding at 5:00 pm on September 1, 2011.
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS
Participants attending the entire course will receive 2.0 CEU’s.
COST
There is no cost to non-compacted/non-contracted Tribes and agencies within the Indian Health Service and Office of Environmental Health and Engineering.

Tribal Operators within the Phoenix Area may be eligible for reimbursement of travel and per diem expenses. Tribal Operators eligible for reimbursement will only be reimbursed if they attend the entire training and are confirmed. Reimbursements and rates will be based on the federal guidelines.

The event’s keynote speaker is Maria Otero, the U.S. Department of State's Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs. Also speaking will be Diana Maritza Betancourt, who is stationed in Central America as Water For People’s region manager. Diana will describe her personal experiences in the region helping communities secure safe water.
Water For People helps people in developing countries improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and hygiene education programs. The gala’s theme, Women in Water, is a critical one. In developing countries women walk miles each day to secure water for their families and villages, often preventing them from earning an income or education.

Water policy makers, management professionals, tribal representatives, scientists and other stakeholders are invited to attend the Workshop on Water Management and Climate Change in Northern Arizona from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the High Country Conference Center.
Coordinated by NAU’s Watershed Research and Education Program, in collaboration with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the University of Arizona’s Climate Assessment for the Southwest, the workshop will include presentations by climate and water scientists and topical roundtable discussions with scientists and regional experts.
